Festival History
Taking its name from a local tributary of the Mississippi River, and founded in 1979 by Faculty member Mike Covell, The Big Muddy Film Festival is operated by The Department of Cinema and Photography at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Dedicated to encouraging and supporting grass-roots filmmaking and film viewing experiences in local communities and beyond, it has become a well known film event both nationally and internationally. In its 30 years of history, The Big Muddy Film Festival has showcased thousands of the best of the independent works, big and small, from around the world.
